Academy of Music.

The comic opera of " Pinafore " at the above place of amusement was very Well rendered last night. The performance taken as a whole was, we believe, the best yet given by the amateurs. The oast, 'with the exception of Sir Joseph Porter (Mr Turner), Little Buttercup (Mrs Corofan), and the boatswain's mate (Mr Coney), was as on previous occasions.. Mr Turner played the character very well indeed, and although his singing was cqt as perfect or finished as Mr McGregor's, yet he threw mere life into the representation. MrrCorbgan' as Buttercup was a complete success, and although she was somewhat nervous in the beginning of the piece, yet that quickly wore off, and she

displayed considerable talent in pour tray- ' ing the character. The byplay was good, her looks, gestures, and mode of expres-1 sion in the spoken parts, showed stie had a just conception of the character of the bumboat woman. She was well received, and applause was frequently accorded her during the piece." The Josephine of Mrs Kilgour was even better than her previous representations; while in the dark blue dress, with hat to match, she appeared to greater advantage than on previous occasions. Mr Airey we have seldom heard sing better, and the same we can say of Mr Hilton and Mr Steward. The remainder of Hheeharacters were well sustained, and the choruses were..capitally rendered. • Altogether the representation was a success, and the audience, a very fair one in point of numbers, appeared highly pleased with the entertainment provided for them. A fair sum has, by this performance, been added to the Lucas fund. ■■
