THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. TUESDAY, NOVEMBBB 2, 1880.

Itf our telegraphic columns yesterday we gave the details of another massacre in the South Seas. The greed for gain will ever lead men to undertake hazardous enter* prises, and among tho many ways of making money few offer so many difficulties, yet with those overborne, procuring labor from the islands for the cotton and sugar plantations in Fiji, few pay more handsomely. Bat the work of taking or inducing the wild cannibals of the South Sea Islands to leave their homes is not a handsome employment—yet to a certain claps of men it presents many allurements. Its a pirate's life—a free, roving, wild one, full of adventures and hair breath escapes —and if the take of labor or work people is lar^e, the profits from tho trip enable these fishers of men to enjoy a long spree on shore. The Government of Fiji pays ten pounds for each islander passed as fit for service; which the owners of the vessels receive, they bearing all the ezpeDse of taking the men from their Islands and . returning them upon the expiration of their term of three years' servitude. It is slavery tp all intents and purposes, notwithstanding the strict regulations introduced by Sir A. Gordon, and the necessity of these labor vessels havjng always a Government agent on board. Of course these lawless and savage attacks of the natives are not to be tolerated, yet when more is known of the mode in which these islanders are occasionally treated, it is not matter for surprise that they should make violent reprisals. ;' ■.:; "'i;V ■-"•" : '--- ..,'.■; ?■- ■■■'.. :.■
