THE MAYORALTY.
(To the Editor of the Evening Star,), i , : Sib,—The time for nomiiution of candidates for the Mayoral chair is fast drawing nigh, and although no candidates hare the courage yet to declare themselves, it U fit that the burgesses should look around, and as a matter of courtesy it * might not be amiss to east an eye on the Council itself. Men may make excellent Councillors, and yet be but second or third rate Mayors; still it is possible and tven probable that a Rood Councillor toaj , also be a good Mayor, and no higher testimony could be paid to the .integrity., of a Councillor than for the ratepayento, choose him who has already done them ser?ice. It may be that he on whom the public rely may not wish to stand (in my . opinion that is an adrantage), but as the Herald puts it he would be a churl who would refuse the desire of the bofgetief. I am aware that some hare declared their unwillingness to stand With no salary attached to the office. - This «bjeotiosi appears to haveJmt Uttl» weighV^ciu>th« ' ing extraordinary is expeeied^faoni Iho Mayor of astnall municipality. 3onM» ] of the candidates, mentioned do not appear to carry that amount 1 of.re*, pe'ot desirable' in a, Chief Magistrate; . while the desire of some uiay be to'advance ' themselves at the expense of the community. This is manifestly an evil, and should be prevented, as the honours at the disposal of burgesses have no right to be degraded'it this way. The office should be 1 held bj ot» whom the borgo-es desire to honor, instead of by one who may wish to use his position for his own ends, and without any great stretch of the iuMgnttttou it should not be difflontt to find the umui to whom the votvop* ■ »rouldl»ethep(ai>rt.~roars,4c, I ' AScmeiss '
