Mining Review of the Week.
In lieu of anything nearer home, Te Aroha continues to be the alUabsorbing topic in mining circles. It isstated that the Warden will grant protection to the prospectors, bat not to any of the others. These gentlemen will; hare to take their, chance with the rest'
when the field is open... Opinions difier . considerably, many believing, even in the-' face of the recent trial crashing, that no 1 anriferoas reef has yet been discovered at Te Aroha, while others seem inclined to," think that the prospectors are keeping back something. This may be so, bat we are inclined to doubt it, from the reason , that the surface of the ground has been thoroughly prospected tor years, and if any aariferoas reef cropped oat, its discovery ere now is certain, while on the other hand the prospecting done is only the seripiufr/oat f of a few paltry holes. We do not write disparaging of the field—*far fromitj on the 'contrary, we believe that the surface specimen finds', are genuine, and that the fact of so moon gold lying ; about can, indicate nothing else but a rich reef somewhere* in the' vicinity, which, however, scratching *boat after the manner of bam, door fowk will not unearth. We are of opinion that far more satisfactory results would be obtained by putting a prospecting* cross-cut right through the. bald spar 1 from its base. Let • company be formed for this purpose, and if there is anything in the ground it will soon be found. An event of no small moment was the recent trial crushing of the Victoria company, which produced a Jrighly enoourag* ing result, and fortells an era of prosperity for this company, which had met with nothing hitherto bat exceeding "hard luck." In connection with this matter, the question of the high cost of carting from the head of the Waiotahi creek arises, and we would reobminend the . companies interested to agitate: for the ■ purpose of inducing the County 7 Counefl , to subsidise the oost of the purchase of of an Amerioan quartz waggon, whioh would materially lessen the cost of oartage and likewise prove a, direct-benefit' to the,, whole district as a means of enabling the immense masses of low-grade auriferous stone in .that locality to be worked with profit. ,< ; . ,; r
