Alexander Annan, who was recently fined £200, with'the alternative of twelve months' imprisonment for illicit distillation at Waitemo, near Palmerston paid the fine this afternoon, and waß immediately discharged from gaol. Philip McCarthy, for aiding and abetting in the offence was discharged on bail yesterday in his own recognisances for his appearance at the ensuing sessions of the District Court at Palmerston, pending an • appeal by Mr Macdermott. Mary Hood! remains in gaol at present., -, ; .. /i, : A Reprieve fn■> the Chinaman.; The prisoner Ah Lee was visited at the' gaol this morning by Bishop Nevill, who; was accompanied by C. C. Kettle, and Albert Lung Chung, interpreter. The condemned man continues to assert his innocenoe of the murder. We under stand that the bishop is taking steps on the convict's behalf to endeavour to obtain a respite of the sentence of death until further enquiries can be made.
