Mr G.N. Phillips' Lecture.

There was a good attendance at Mr G. N. Phillips lecture on " Macauley and the Clapham Sect," under the auspices of the Thames Young Men's Christian Association. • Mr James McGowan occupied the ohair. The lecturer having introduced his subject by a short resume of the early life of the poet and historian, gave a number of particulars of that band' of philanthropists, the Clapham sect, including the great. Wilberforce, Granville, Macauley's father, and others who were prominently connected with the abolition of sla?ery. Mr Phillips showed the influence for good oh the faturehis* torian, constant intercourse with these men had, interspersing his remarks with a number of highly entertaining anecdotes of the early life of the author of the " Lays of Ancient Some." These illustrated his prodigious memory, eccentricity, wide range of study and hiamany virtues. Mr Phillips concluded a highly interesting lecture by reading ' Lord Macaulay*s account of the last hours of Charles 11. Mr Benshaw moved a vote of thinks to* the lecturer, and in' doing so expressed a hope that Mr Phillips" would give another lecture on Lord Maoaulay'i Remains. Mr Phillips in acknowledging the compliment, promised to ooncede to' the request if time permitted. After the pronunciation of the benediction and the singing of the) doxology, the assemblage dispersed after haviag enjoyed a genuine literary treat.'
