AUCKLAND.
This day. AN ECONOMICAL GOTERNMENT.
The Governor of the Mount Eden gaol has written to the various heads of Government Departments intimating that prison labor is available, but that it must be paid for. What a farce if such a regulation is carried out! INCREASING OUR BURDENS. The Government are largely increasing the number of Native Land Court JudgesPossibly as the Ministry will be shortlived they intend utilising the Courts for the despatch of a deal of important business in the interests of the many.' THE MEMBER FOR WAIKATO. Mr Whyte, who was lately banquetted at Cambridge, deserves some mention for the nature of his after-dinner speech. I came across a copy of the local paper giving the reception details, and as he has a number of constituents on the Thames I shall take an early opportunity of reviewing it. Many of the points treated of will possess an interest for some of his Upper Thames constituents, and will no doubt be a helping hand for them in their choice of a representative when the elections come round next year. The speech is full of gush if nothing .else. His colleague for Waipa is likely to address his electorate .next week.
