REPLY TO "EDITOR OF ENOCH."
(To the Editor of the Evening Star.)
Sib,—After publishing Mr Wood's foulmouthed slander in reference to Mr Simon's lecture, in justice to Mr Simon (the lecturer) and the audience that heard him, I Hope you will insert the following: The letter is a false representation—what might be properly called lying and slandering—as I was there and heard it. It was one of the most thoughtful, intelligent, and elevating lectures that has ever been, delivered at the Thames, and was appreciated by a thoughtful, intelligent audience, and a hearty vote of thanks was given to him for it—excepting three who got into a rage, and said it was blasphemy. Mr Simon should have gone to those men and asked them what opinions they would tolerate. Mr Simon said that Spiritualiim was in harmony with what Christ taught, but not in harmony with what professing Christians teach. It is strange that a man like Mr Wood, who writes so many foolish things, and needs so much forbearance, should heap so much abuse upon almost all lecturers and preachers. It is a disgrace to the place that men of No. 1 education and refinement cannot give a peaceable intellectual lecture without being abused for it, when such stuff as Mr W. publishes is toleratedr Your readers will recollect that affair of Mr W; about the Anti-Christ Napoleon the third had to conquer the world, and then the reverse took place, that he was coaquered, and he and his army taken prisoners. Thin would have been a poser to any other man but Mr W., and to get over this little difficulty Napoleon had to rise again. After that is it to any use reasoning with a man of that stamp; can you do anything else but do as Mr Simpson did ?—turn the whole thing into ridicule ani laugh'at.—l am, Ac, 1 J. Hoen. October 21st, 1880.
