J. E. Const, Chief Postmaster. Chief Post Office, Thames, October 19,1880. A few days ago a banquet was given at Copenhagen in honor of Mile. Sarah Bernliardt. Somebody toasting "La Belle France" put forward his glass to that of the celebrated actress. She refused to advance hers, and, rising, proposed a toast to Denmark, the Itoyal Eamily, and "La Prance Entiere." The allusion was evident. By "La France Entiere''. she meant France with her provinces regained, the war of revenge declared, perhaps organised, by herself. M. Eochefort asks how Germany will take such a grave declaration. He sees in Mdlle. Bernhardt, an emissary of M. Gambetta, charged to sound the northern courts on their attitude in the event of a war of revenge. He regards her as 'the new Jeanne d'Arc, who will march upon BerliD, and restore to France her lost provinces. The comparison is, perhaps, not Tery respectful for M. Gambetta, but M. Rocheforl professes no great respect for the Republican leader. In any case the article is a good satire on the German alarms. That a French writer, moreover, can so speak of such a subject, shows how profoundly peaceful is the spirit at present prerailing in France. The Niagara falls,is a sight never to be forgotten. There are many waterfalls but only one McGoWAN selling 3s T*A.
