The Schiratka Arctic Expedition has returned to New fork, having obtained many relics of the Franklyn Expedition, and also the remains of Lieut. Irving. Important rivers and coasts were discovered, and geographical errors Corrected. The longest sledge ride on record was made in the face of terribly cold weather, showing that white men can adapt themselves to the life of the Esquimaux in prosecuting Polar journeys. The testi*
mony of native witnesses shows that the fate of the officers and crews of H.M.S. Erebus and Terror, was sad beyond description. What became of the leader and a large part of the crew is not known. Only a small party of officers, black about the mouth, with no flesh on their bones, were seen by the Esquimaux dragging a boat across the ice, when they disappeared and nothing more was' seen of them until their skeletons were found under the' boat, and it was evident they had fallen a prey to wild beasts, and with dreadful evidences that they had fed on the bodies of their weaker companions before succumbing to starvation and cold. Eecords of the expedition were used by the Esquimaux as play-things, and destroyed.
Seven negroes condemned for murder were taken out of gaol and lynched in Tennessee.
Some anxiety is felt for Bennett's Arctic Expedition.
