The Herald in. a sub-leader in yesterday's issue referring to the resignation of Sir Julius Vogel says:~" We are not able to concur with the opinions of those who think- that he has rendered the colony large services; en the contrary, we considered that he has been the too fruitful source of many of the financial evils from which it suffers/" Of course our contemporary is entitled to his opiuion, but even with that allowance we cannot permit the opinion to pass unchallenged. Sir Julius Yogel, as the originator of the Public Works policy, in addition to the provision made in his scheme for the borrowing of large sums of money, also provided that the expenditure should extend over a fixed period—lo years—and we are sure never intended that the borrowed millions should have been squandered on unremunerative works as they have been, yogel planted good seed and had he continued to be the husbandman good fruit would have been borne ere now, and in all justice he should not be saddled with the faults of his successors. We hold that Vogel is entirely blameless for the present financial state of the colony.
