Judge Gillies and Mr G. S. Graham, Manager Colonial Insurance, are passengers by the Surat, which left on September the 24th.
A pawnbroker applied to the Resident Magistrate under section thirty-seven of the. Pawnbrokers' Act for compensation for stolen goods he had been compelled to surrender. The Magistrate declined the application.
The Right' Rev. Lord Abbot Alcock and Rev. S. Breiken, Benedictines, arrived by the Australia to establish, a branch order here. The Hibernian Australian Catholic Benefit Society will present them with an address.
Large quantities of trout ova are being distributed in the country districts.
The Auckland Meat Preserving Com* pany are rapidly extending their opera* tions. Their shipments are principally to the country sawmills, gum fields, and South Sea Islands, and their prices are thirty per cent, below the imported article. The plant is capable of turning out 6000 tins weekly.
The Auckland Society of Arts will hold their annual exhibition in March.
