THE PULPIT.

(To the Editor of the EvENfNfl Stab.) Sib,—Having read " Sceptic's " letter in Saturday's Star I started on Sunday morning, on a search after Consistency, and having'alighted upon a spot suitable for nay search, I passively awaited the announcement of the subject, namely, " The obligation laid upon Christians to compassionate the human race." Evidently the preacher felt sore from the rubbing "Sceptic" had given him, and launched out upon a subject he had not power to handle; got angry and con* tinned his discourse, speaking of living lies and hateful shams. My search being for consistency I had to decide : this man is not consistent, he is implying; that we who sit before him are living Ties and hateful shams, because we do not do that which comes properly within his province as a professing minister of the Gospel. Can it be consistent for such an one to take human life as easy as possible for himself and scold others from the pulpit for not doing his work P I trow not; such might do in a country village, but we in this colony have our reasoning powers sharpened up a bit, and exclaim, man be consistent! First heal thyself, take the beam out of thine own eye. Be like thy master Christ! A consistent man may lead, but an inconsistent man will find it difficult to drive. " The good shepherd goeth before his sheep and they follow him." Today as ever example ig better than preoept. Christianity is not a creed, but a life of righteousness, of selfsacrißce for the well-being of others—yea, nothing else than conformity to the life of Christ, who went about doing good. And this is the. want of the age, instead of the gentlemen who sit at home at ease. The world wants consistency!—l am, &c, C.B.
