BRADLAUGH ON THE IRISH TENANTRY.
~:££*,l n considering the Irish Belief Bill in *&♦ House of Commons, Mr Synam moved that the rate of interest to be charged on a loan should not exceed 1 per oe'nf per annum—Lord F. Cavendish opposed the amendment, for the reasons that it would involve loss, and establish an embarassing precedent for demands not only by Ireland itself, but by England and Scotland. Mr Bradlaugh said, he rose to make an appeal to the Government and to support the hon. member for Limerick. This measure was one either of pure business or of generosity. He understood during the discussion, which
I he had listened to with great care, that it was the wish of the Government to behave in the roost generous spirit, and very properly so, to (he distressed people of Ireland, and the Bill said so. It would be most unfortunate if the notion got abroad that the people of England and Scotland intend only to be generous so far as involved no cost to themselves. (Hear, hear.) He admitted the whole of what had been urged by the noble lord on the Treasury Bench, that loss must result from the acceptance of the amendment of the lion, member for Limerick, But he submitted that was no sort of measure of generosity, and he appealed to the Government not to be generous with half a haud. On behalf of an English constituency, and speaking, if the committee would permit him to say so, for a very large number of English working men he would ask the Government that some loss might fall upon them rather than this measure of generosity might be misunderstood. Mr Synam's amendment was lost; but the Times puts it that this " does no prejudice the general question, upon which, we trust, the Government may be able to offer a compromise at once acceptable to the Irish representatives and satisfactory to the consciences and the kindly hearts of the people of Great Britain."
