[beply,] Tp MESSES JOHN WILSON, JOHN BEAD, THOMAS VEALE, JAMES DABBOW, Wk. McCULLOUGH, --ABD- THB OTHER GENTLEMEN SIGNING THE ABOVE BEQtfl--BITION. fi ENTLBMBN,-It is with extreme pleasure that I receiTe the requisition you hate so kindly presented to me, and with regret that for many good and lutnoient reasons I cannot consent to the request made by you. I hare always held the opinion that the very honorable position of Iftayor of this Borough should not be monopolised by any one individual, but should be, as it were, the reward to deserving citiwns for services rendered the public. I hare also been, as you are aware, a member of the Borough Council since the formation of. the Municipality, now oyer six years ago, and have always taken a prominent part in the business of the Council, so consider I am somewhat entitled to a reit from public duties. It is very pleasing to me to find that during that time, and especially during my term as Mayor, I hare so merited the good opinion you hare •0 kindly expressed in your requisition, and to find that the confidence reposed in me yeers'ago is still retained; but I can assure you that while I must refuse your request on this occasion, I shall none the less give my best attention to all matters affecting the welfare and prosperity of this district.
