Presentation of a Requisition to his Worship the Mayor.
This afternoon a number of gentlemen presented a requisition to the Mayor, L. Ehrenfried, Esq., asking him to allow himself to be nominated for the office of Mayor for the next term. The address, and Mr Ehrenfried's reply will be found in another column.
His Worship said he could not but express the pleasure given him by the address, but at the same time he must refuse the request. The requisition was most flattering to him, and complimentary to the manner in which he had discharged the duties of the office he bad the pleasure of holding. He thought, however, that the office should go round, and there were many gentlemen in the community who were qualified for the position, besides he had been, as it were, in office for a number of years, and should be allowed a rest for a while. He would always take the greatest possible interest in municipal matters, and although out.of office, still his best exertions were at the disposal of the public. On some other occasion be would be happy to accept an office at the hands of the public, but on the present occasion he must respectfully deoline the honor. ■'- .
