The Mount Ida Chronicle says the Chinese have subscribed £1000 towards the defence of Ah Lee and Lee Gay, the collector having visited every part o^ Otago. The Chinese say if the accused are hung, Europeans need not in future employ Chinamen; therefore they will | combine to get their countrymen off, and so far they have put every obstacle in the way of the police. The body of Birrel, drowned near Portobello a few weeks ago, was recovered yesterday. Holvenson's claim at Hyde is again on good gold. The Grand Jury returned true bills againßt James Williams, for perjury; John Thomas, John Button and Isabella Thomas, for wholesale larcenies-at Dunedin. John Thomas pleaded guilty, and the trial of the other is proceeding. Mrs Thomas pleaded she was acting under coercion. Dutton and Thomas being convicted on the first charge pleaded guilty to 19 others. The Judge sentenced them both to seven years' penal servitude, saying he could see no difference between them. The Crown offered no evidence against the woman.
