The opening of the Exhibition in Melbourne appears to have been a very brilliant and successful affair. The day was fine, and Melbourne had a holiday. The city was crowded with visitors from all parts of the country and neighbouring colonies, and altogether it must have been such a treat as seldom falls to the lot of colonials to witness. The opening, ceremonies seem to have been impressive, and every means were taken to mark the day as one of note in the annals of the progress of Victoria. The experience gained at Sydney has no doubt been turned to advantage, and we shall not be. surprised to find that the Melbourne Exhibition is adjudged one of the most successful of its kind that has been held for
years. The cablegrams to-day state that Dr Hector and the officers of the New Zealand Court had their department well arranged, and although the space at their disposal was less than that at Sydney, and the exhibits more numerous, better arrangement was shown in placing them. The Marquis of Normanby, with a most brilliant vice-regal party, did the Exhibition thoroughly, and especially showed great interest in the New Zealand Court. We should expect little else from our former Governor, who with all his faults, ever showed a just appreciation of this colony, its people, and their pursuits.
