Thames Borough Council.
SPFCHL MEETING.
A special meeting of the Council, convened by His Worship the Mayor, was held at the Council Chambers last evening. Present —His Worship the Mayor, Crs McGowan, Bawden, Speight^ and Mennie.
The Mayor, in explaining his intention in calling tbe meeting, said that the Council was doubtless aware that ait last meeting he had been deputed to interview : the manager of the Bank of] New Zealand, with a view to obtaining'a further advance to meet the more pressing liabilities. Tbe result of the interview was that Mr Murray had agreed to supply funds to discharge all the debts of the Borough, with the exception of McCaul's andT. and, S .Morrin's. The Council would thus hare £800 to pay th ir pressing debts, and he thought the offer should be accepted.
In answer to Gr Mennie, the Mayor said that the accounts to hand only showed they owed £690, but there were a few outstanding liabilities which would bring the total up to £800.
After some further discussion it was decided to thank the Mayor for his successful uegotation with the Bank, and to wipe off the debts of the Borough as soon as possible. The Mayor pointed out that the financial position of the the Borough was now much better than it was last May when they owed £'5,C00, whereas now the total endebtedues's was only half that amount. By next March he >jianeri_ that \\}mr liabilities would be reduced to &» jV w.. TUB PBOMIBED £SCD. On the motion of Cr Speight, it was decided to communicale with Mr Sheehan regarding the £500 promised by him, as a member of the late Government, to the Thames from the vote in aid of roads in native districts.
With reference to the reclamation tramway it was decided to instruct the Foreman of Works to make an inventory of the number of rails, etc., for comparison with that supplied by the Government officials. ' -
The Mayor suggested that as the Tararu tramway would shortly fall into the hands of the Borough it might. be advisable to secure a portion of the railing stock, which was being disposed of by the Bank of New Zealand. ,
It was decided to refer the matter to the Works' Committee to report at next meeting of the Council. This concluded the business.
In California a man named Ause was appointed hangman, and the boys at once •hristened him noose Anie.
