At the Waste Lands Board yesterday Capt. Steele, local agent for Grant and Foster, proposed the deferred payment system for the purchase of seventeen thousand acres of Te Aroha land. The Board agreed to part with the land at forty shillings an acre on certaiu conditions respecting residence, cultivation, an'd improvements.
At the City Council yesterday it was stated that of the 19 men who had applied for stone-breaking, only three went to work. The City Engineer, authorised supply tools to worthy persons seeking work.
The Council decided to hold their meetings on evenings instead of day time.
Another lad was anested last evening for desertion from the Kohimarama Training School.
Hr George Grey is ill at Kawau, suffering from the old complaint in the leg. He is not likely to take an active part in politics lor some time.
The natives in the Waikato, inside the confiscated boundary, display anxiety to S> 11 land.
The Captain of the Danae received a telegram from the Commodore at Sydney: authorising him to hold himself in readiness to proceed to Fiji to bring Sir Arthur Gordon to New Zealand. :
Mr Wbitaker vi*its the Thames shortly to enquire into the Maori claims to com pensaiion. .
Sis thousand pound* are to be expended immediately in the construction of roads and bridges .North of Auckland.
