AMALGAMATION OF FIRE BEL GADES.
(To the Editor of the Evening Stab.)
Sir,—The Borough Council at their special meeting held last evening considered the propriety of amalgamating the Brigades under one Superintendent with a Captain for each Brigade. After the matter was disposed of by being referred to the Fire Brigades Committee, His. Worship the Mayor was requested to lay the matter before a meeting of the two Brigades with the view of obtaining an expression of opinion from the firemen as to the desirability of the proposa'. For some time the members of the Shortland Brigade have at their weekly meetings for practice discussed various rumours to the effect that the Borough Council was in favor of an amalgamation and that the Grahamstown contingent were anxious to place themselves, under the command of our Superintendent, Mr Curtis Moore (a gentleman who haa bad considerable experience with fire brigades in America.) The rumours have 'iiot found much favor amongst the members of the Shortland Brigade, the opinion generally expressed being that any inter* ference with the Brigades would 'be highly injudicious, and that the experience of past years has gone to prove that the Brigades are better and more efficient under the present system. At any rate the Shortland Brigade, the oldest VolunI teer Fire Brigade on the Thames/would to a man resist.any interference in their constitution, therefore they would not be willing to agree lo any proposal .likely to affect the Grahamstown contipgent unless the latter unanimously agreed to the change.—l am, &c,
Sawdust.
