CALEDONIAN.
The manager's report on the workings of the No. 3 level is as follows:—-" Upon striking through the hanging-wall of the new lode in the south face, No. 3 level, as reported last week, the-footwall of the No. 6 lode was found, with a partition of only about a foot in thickness of mullock between them. In the latter part of the week the stone has greatly improved in appearance in the No, 6 lode, showing a considerable
quan'ity of bright showy copper '"vand iron pyrites, the first of the description seen in the big lodes in this level. The ground is of an easier character. lam saving the quartz. I purpose driving through to the hanging-wall, and driving south, taking part of the lode in the face. This face is being forced all the shifts round, as the stone looks very promising." Beferripg to the operations on the Young American lode at No. 2 level he says :— *' The ground continues favourable here. The lode is about two feet in thickness; in the early part of the week it turned very hungry. It is now showing better. This morning 15 pounds of good picked atone, some of them fair specimens, were bagged, and the general quartz shows payable. Nine loads have been passed through the battery."*
