WELLINGTON.
This day.
The Recalcitrant Auctioneer. At the Magistrate's Court this morning McDonald was fined £5 and costs for exercising his business as auctioneer after 7 o'clock at night. The defence was—no intention to set the law at defiance, but he wished to bring the matter before the Court with a view of getting the law repealed. The Magistrate said the act was a breach of a clearly defined ordinance, and cautioned the defendant that should the offence be repeated he would inflict a full penalty of fifty pounds. Yesterday. Returns of rerenue to date are being prepared for the guidance of the Government. I hear that so far as they have gone, they show more favorable results than were anticipated, especially in Customs, while the railways are not so bad M was feared.
