At the wool sales today 9600 bales were offered; prices were firmly maintained, and there was a good attendance of home and foreign buyers. Four and a half per cent. New Zealand Loan 1879 is quoted at 96£. Beat Scotch pig-iron No. 1, free on board in Clyde, 50s. September 21. At the wool sale to-day 4000 bales were offered, making a total of 261,400 catalogued since the opening. There was was only a moderate demand, but prices were firmer. Galvanised iron is quoted at £17. Cape News. News has been received from Capetown that 1200 Basutos attacked the Cape Rifles, which are operating against them, and killed an officer and two men. The Rifles, however, inflicted a heavy loss on the Basutos.
Ireland, The land league agitation movement in Ireland is at the present time very active. Spotting Items. Trickett and Laycock are both well and continue in active training. The latter is sanguine of winning his race with Blackham. He has now got his new boat from Swaddle and Winship, of of Newcastleon Tyne. Hanlon has arrived in England, and has gone to Putney, where he has gone into training. Cricket Hatch. .Australians versus Eighteen of Bradford commenced yesterday. The Australians went in first and scored 183, Boyle being top scorer, with 44; he was stumped out. The Home Team in the first innings scored 86 runs, and being over 80 behind their opponents, had to follow on. In the second innings they have scored 88 runs for three wickets.
In the first innings of the Bradford eleven, Palmer took six wickets. Spofforth, Bannerman and Slight are absent from this match. Bebmn, September 21. Germany. The latest news from the Cape states that Tambookieo, a powerful chief, has joined the Basutos against the British. Protest by the Sultan. In consequence of the relations between Turkey and England in regard to the Montenegrin difficulty, various works which |had been commenced ; atf Cyprus have been stopped. The Porte has issued a circular saying that the Powers must be answerable for any result that may occur though the violation of the rights of the Sultan.
