Meeting of the Borough and County Authorities.

The meeting took place last night, arranged some time ago, between the committee of the Borough and County Councils to take into consideration the question of certain money paid to the Government, which it is alleged was so paid wrongfully.' Present—Mr Brodie, in the chair, Messrs Speight, McGowan, Dean, Porter, Coutts, and Carpenter.

Mr Brodie spoke at length on the question and stated his views upon the position but as this matter has been fully discussed in our columns, it is unnecessary to repeat the arguments used. Mr Speight read portions of Mr Mackay's agreements with the natives. After some conversation the following committee were appointed to consider the whole question and report to a future' meeting : —Messrs Brodie, Carpenter, Porter, McGowan and Speight.
