Notices [ADVEETIBEMENT.] REPLY TO~DE. PAYNE. (To tke Editor of the Evening Stab.) QIR—My attention has been drawn to a 0 letter signed " Martin H. Payne" in your paper of Saturday, and ns it is written at me 1 reply. In the first place Mr Laurie was in "the room previous to my evidence given before Dr Skae, being completed, tfext, it, was myielf who urged Mr Braesey to bring forward Mr Laurie as a witness, and it was I that directed Mr Brassey's messenger to the place where Mr Laurie was at work at 1.30 on the same day. He gave evidence before Dr Skae a little after 2, o'clock. That disposes of Martin H. Payne's assertionabout my not thinking Mr Laurie would be produoed in time, &0., for I virtually produced him myself. ' , ,- , Now as to Mr. Laurie's leg and bed clothing being beastly dirty. Take the leg first; my evidence said «the uninjured leg. Wh*n be broke his leg he was working under the Goods Wharf up to his kneeß in mud, and that leg was not waahed until he had been in the Hospital four weeks. I saw it on three occasions after his admission when the dirt stains were still on it, convincing evidence of the want of proper attention to patients. As to the bed clothes. If Mr Laurie is asked, and he is on the Thames to be asked by anyone, he will say, at first when I was taken to the Hospital the shock to the system from breaking my leg caused me such pain in the body and such feverisbness that I neither slept nor took notice of anything, but after two or three days I noticed the bed clothing was • • poisoned with dirt" (I think these were the words he used), and I iusisted on having them removed and clean ones substituted 5 after that I took care I always had clean clothes, for I insisted on it. Lastly, my statemeats on these matters were not challenged or contradicted by Mr Aitken, Mr Honiss, or Mr Cain. Mr Aitken was the only one who referred to my evidence of dirty clothes, aad suggested that the stains I saw were caused by patients spilling their food over them, and so causing them to be dirtied. I took this as admitting and confirming my evidence. Mr Honiss did Hot challenge my statements as to want of proper attention to patients or cleßDliness, but he did as to my statements about not being heard by the Investigation Committee of the Hospital. . Mr Cain did not make any reply or remark upon my evidence." I think without degrading myself to reply in the style of language used by Martin H. Payne, I have fully and entirely refuted his statements, and having done so, I will give my reasons for refusing to'put my evidence in writing for the Investigation .Committee, after I had written to them that I wished to evidence; My letter to the Committee, or the contents of it, were shown to Dr Payne for he name down to me at the Council Chambers and wanted to know what I was going to give evidence for ? and what evidence I was going to give? and seeing that I saw what a farce the investigation would be, conducted on the principle of an accused person having a charge made against him and being allowed to go to the accuser and his witnesses and examine them if not actually intimidate them from giving the intended evidence, hence my reason for declining to put my evidence in writing, to be submitted and considered by the Investigation Com-. mittee before being heard by them. F. 0. Dean.
