Afteb a number of harassing delays; the dead whale wag safely towed to Kopu wharf yesterday afternoon, and during next week will be tried cut. Old Shanghae is in great glee at tbe presence of bo distinguished a visitor, and brage about his " big bull fi?h ". incessantly.. This morning quite a number of residents paid a visit of; inspection, and all expressed astonishment at tbe gigantic pro* portions of his whalesbip. This afternoon several steamers plied . betweeen the wharves and Kopu, so that the curious, had a chance of inspecting the immense mammal at a Tery moderate price. The whale is'moored at the Virl of Kopu wharf; and as it lies belly up its stomach reminds one more of a capsized vessel than anything else, the belly, ribbed longitudinally, giving the idea of battens. The steamers Vivid, Te Arolia and Blanche are advertised to leave Grahamstown and Shortland Wharves to-morrow Afternoon to carry visitors to Kopu. ; ,:■■■';..j- ' ■■'/:' 11-: l- -''" •; :" ;

The Waikato Times speaks as follows of the discovery of gold in that,district:—Mr George Goodwin, well known at Ngarua* wahia, has struck a reef of excellent quartz at Kanawbanawbana, some 12 miles, from Alexandra and eight from Whatawhata. The reef, as it shows in a bluff running north and south, is small, but such as an experienced miner would readily follow up, being of a' very likely quality. Specks of gold have been discovered in some of it, mid Mr Goodwin is very sanguine of yet finding payable gold. A parcel has been cent for trial to the I'hames. No such quartz ha* been found at Ngavuawahia, though a great deal was made of what appeared to be some show of gold.; A Thames miner of much experience was expected from Alexandra a few days ago to pronounce judgment on the "find," and to direct operations in the event of his belief i i the existence there of gold. Mr Go<*iwin.hit upon tlifs quartz reef wliilsr in learch of piles for Te Bore bridge, and though working at it for some months past, the settlers it the immediate neighbourhood were not aware of the find, until a few days ago. T c place in question is situated about two miles inland from the Waipa. .river, and between the range*.

At a banquet recently given to him, Mr Herbert Gladstone told a story of a new Eton boy, who, being unaccustomed to the ways of the place took hie prayer-book to chapel ou the Saturday, and was kicked dowu the stairs for a saint, whereupon on the following day, profiling as he thought, by experience, he lef< his prayer-book at home, and whs kicked down the steps for an athiest. The company made very merry aver the story, but they would have enjoyed the joke a great deal more had they known the juvenile hero they had listened to was the speaker's father—the Premier of England. :

I JVIWe; were to day favored by Mr Oookson, jeweller of Brown street, with a, view of two very handsome articles of jewellery of his own manufacture —a neat diamond ring and an , elegant silver locket and chain. These, valuable articles are intended for presentation to Mr and Miss Murray, teachers of the the Hastings Government school, who are leaving for Dargtville, where Mr Murray has been appointed to the important charge of the district school. Some forgotten proverbial philosopher writes an aphorism about small matters agitating small minds, and if the assassination of a half drowned rat is a small matter, there must be a large number of small minds in our community. SaunteriDg quietly along Albert street this morning in search of a paragraph, our attention was called to about 50 men and boys gaiing intently into the culvert in front of Messrs Gellion and Cos. office, many of them being armed to the teeth with gum spears, South Sea leUnd lances, Tom R»w« don's diamonds, and other uijly; looking mis* piles. After rushing excitedly along the street, thinking at the very least that the Brown street menagerie had broken loose, we asked breathlessly of a bystander the cause of the warlike array, and prepared to climb a verandah post, if our fears re the menagerie were confirmed. But the bystander said it was only a poor little irat tbat had taken refuge under the planks of the culvert crossing, and our confidence was restored. After being hunted from post to pillar for ten minutes, Sir Rodens was bailed in a corner. Then followed an excited rush of armed men, a confusion of sounds, the din as of a fieroe fight, above which pealed the shrill treble of the death! hunted rat. In a few seconds all these sounds were merged in a shout of victory as One gentleman proudly raised the assassinated rat on the point of his spear. Should this "event be handed down' io posterity, some Macaulay of the future may conclude one of bis " Lays of Ancient Hauraki" thuawtae :— " With weeping and with laughter, '"■'. ■'■ \>: Stillis the story told, .. ■• '■ A :- "'■•"•• How'bold KickJ)ennan killed the rat * In the brave days of old."
