Case of Horsewhipping.

A STEgET ENQQUNTKB.

The monotony of Queen street was unexpectedly relieved late yesterday afternoon by a sadden recontre between two well-known gentlemen, in the coarse of which oce administered a sound horsewhipping to the other. The assailant, Captain Kerr, was walking along Queen street in the direction of the wharf, when just as he arrived opposite the National Bank be met Dr. i Smith, ,who was sauntering along witlrH.' N. Abbot and Mr Neville Walker., The i captain crying out •• You —■-scoundrel" , suddenly produced the , horsewhip and ! knocked off the doctor's bell-topper. He then proceeded to inflict a sound casti*; gation on the shoulders of the un*| fortunate, medico, who tried to fend

off the blows at well as he could, hut made no outcry. Once he attempted to beat a retreat, but the captain following him up, resumed his exercise, accompany* ing tho blows with some muttered expressions, amongst which > the word " wife" were distinguishable. Eventually the bystanders interfered, and the gentle* men were separated. An information for assault will, in all probability, be laid. The cause of the affray is thought to be of a domestic character. Captain Kerr came from Sydney about two or three years ago, and is well-known in Auclc'and. He made a fortune at the Cape diamond field, and at about the same time became the' recipient of a legacy. Dr Smith was formerly assayer for the Bank of New Zealand during the early days of the Thames goldfield, but subsequently went home, studied mcdi* fine, and obtained a diploma.
