By Lemoa received last night the following telegram re the Sorata:—" Cape Jerris, noon.—The squalls are moderating a little. The Chimborazo is- here with a tender,mfik,li barque and a tug, with a pump aud gear for the Sorata. The Chimborazo sailed tit noon for Adelaide* after the transhipment of the pumps. Great hopes are expressed to .day of getting the Sorata afloat if the pumps can be worked."
At the drill shed'last night O'Connor, of Timaru, walked one mile in six minutes and fifty-seven seconds. This ia said to be the fastest time in the Australian Colonies.
At ten o'clock the 24 hours go-as-you-please pedestrian match started with nine competitors, but at nine o'clock this morning only four were left ia their places, being Croft, of '"Wellington, 64 miles; Brooks, of Dunedin, 61 miles; Swan, of Cttristohurcli, 58 miles; and Hansen, of Wellington, 58 miles. A woman named Jjtne Burgess has been missing from the residence of Christopher Hobbs, of Horokiwi Valley, since the 7th instant. She left home during the absence of Hobbs, who on returning found the following note:-—"I am dead, dead to this world. Don't trouble about me." The walking match at 1.30 p.m. :— Croft, 84 miles 3 laps ; Brooks, 82 miles 12 laps ; Swan, 76 miles 3 laps ; Hanson, 71 miles 14 laps.
