This day. Capt. McKeDzie has retired from the contest for WaUaia.
About $80 persons attended the meeting of railway-employees last night, when the new Schedule was discussed. The majority expressed themseves in favor of a strike, but there appeared to be a great want of organisation.
An ordinary general meeting of the Standard Insurance Eire and Marine Insurance was held yesterday, Jno. Read in the chair. The report and balancesheet shewed that the net premiums received amounted to £28;790 2s 9d, and interest on investments and transfer fees to £3758 9s 4d. The fire, marine, and guarantee losses are shown as £20,430 18s 9d, and commission?, salaries, and charges, £7748 12s 3d; or a total of £38,179 11s as against £364111s 4d, the revenue for six months : the loss for the half-year being £6541 19s Bd. Balance brought forward from preceding half-year, £2496 9s lOd, reduces the amount to debit of profit and loss to £4034 9s lOd, and to meet this the directors suggest that the sum of £5000 be transferred from the reserve funds.
