THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT YOUR FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 1880.

By reference to our report of the proceedings at the County Council meeting held yesterday afternoon, it will be seen that a resolution was adopted confirming the decision of- the Council to subscribe towards the maintenance of the Big Pump, and also asking for the representation of the Council on?the directorate of the new Pumping Association. The amount to be paid by the Council is £40 per month. It is the intention of the Association to ask the Borough Council to contribute a similar amount, and doubtless if the finances of the Municipality warrant it, an effort will be made to follow the lead of the County Council. It should, however be understood that the Waio-Karaka pumping works should receive consideration, and their maintenance be made a portion of any general scheme for ensuring the permanence of the pumping and prospecting of the deep levels. As we have times without number indicated, our very existence as a community depends on the success of mining, so that every fair and reasonable support that can be given to foster and promote the interests of this industry should be cheerfully given by our local bodies. We believe the carrying out of the scheme for pumping lately mooted in Auckland will be successful if adopted in its entirety, and we venture to express a belief that through the clouds which have so long obscured the prospects of our goldfield we can discern the first glimmerings of the dawn that heralds the advent of a most prosperous era.
