TAUBANGA.

This day. An important case of selling spirits to the natives at an out-lying district was heard at Ohinemutu under the act of 1879. Inspector Emerson conducted the case, and proved that a storekeeper at Tauranga had sold to the natives fifteen gallons of rum, to be delivered at Ohinemutu. The Magistrate gave a decision in favor of defendant, upon grounds that the rum was purchased at Tauranga, not being an out-lying district, and Eigley, as carrier, was not liable. It is now understood by tho natives that they can purchase spirits in any town in the North Island, and have it delivered in an outlying district in any quantity. Inspector Emerson intends next licensing meeting to object to all wholesale houses in the Tauranga district, consequent on the late

decision.
