CALEDONIAN.
Crushing for this company will probably be started on Saturday next on a crushing of 15 or 20 loads from the eastern lode at No. 2 level ; the quartz looks well and the manager's testß have proved satisfac tory. Connection has been at last established between the winze from No. 2 level and the rise from No. 3 and the current of air rushes through the working as through a funnel. The completion of this work is a matter of some importance as it now reduces to a minimum the danger to men working at No. 3. level from an influx of gas, besides improving the ventilation throughout the mice. For some days past the manager has been employed breaking quartz in the footwall of the lode in south face, No. 3 level, and today a start was made on the hanging wall side. The manager's report for the past week is as follows:—" The winze from No. 2 level has struck through to the rise from No. 3 level, No. 1 section and communication opened, bringing good air to the face. I shall be taking down the footwall lode, stripped in the winze during the week. South face, No. 1 section, No. 3 level: Driving here is continued with three shifts of men in the 24 hours on the footwall side of the lode, taking part of the lode in the face. Much more progress is made in this way. The lode shows more bright silvery mineral. There is no other change to , note in the part broken down. I have not broken the hanging . wall part for the fortnight. This will be broken down when the face is a few feet further ahead. Cross-cut No. 2 section No. 3 level s The eastern lode is found. here with the gold bearing veins which proved payable further back forming a junction. There is about two feet of good looking stone, which gives good results with my small berdan tests. lam taking out a crushing, fiise, No. 2 sec-; tion: lam rising diagonally, crossing the ( runs of stone under where the payable stone was abore No. 2 level. The character of the lode has changed during the' last two. feet rising. It is now a hard,; compact body of stone about four feet; thick, between two well defined walls. The opening of the mine is bo far completed that the work in fnture will be mostly in the different lodes."
