SEDUCTION OP THE BEER TAX TO THREEPENCE. — GOT. ENMENT DEFEAT.
In Committee on the Beer Duty Bill, Mr Ballanee moved that the duty be threepence instead of sixpence. After discussion the House divided on the question that the word " sixpence " stand pare of .the clause:— DIVISION LIST. Ayes, 3,4 —Andrews, Barron, Brandon. Hurst, Hutchison, Levin, Macandrew, Moss, ■Pitt, Reid, Richardson, Shepherd, Stevens, Swanson, Te Wheoro, Turnbull, Whyte, Wright, Bain. Bowen, Bunny, Finn, Gisborne, Harris, Hursthouse, Kelly, Kenny, Montgomery, Ormond, Reeves, Richmond, Seddon, Shrimski, Sutton, Tainui, Tole, Wallis, Wood.
The word threepence was then inserted. ■ ' Sir George Grey asked whether after their defeat Government intended to proceed with the bill. Major Atkinson said they did. The remaining clauses of the bill were agreed to. On the bill being reported, Mr McLean moved that it be re committed to restore the sixpence. This day. Mr George McLean gave notice that he would move the recommittal of the Beer Duty Bill next day to have the duly restored to the original amount.
The Deceased Persons Estate Duty Bill, Stamp Fee Bill, and Stamp Act Amendment Bil were read a second time and passed through Committee, and the latter read a third time and passed.
The Waikato Confiscated Lands Bill was read a second time and passed through Committee.
The House rose at 2.20.
