Entertainment.

An entertainment for the purpose of furthering the temperance movement took place last evening in the Templar Hall. The room was well filled. Mr James Jones was the Chairman of the meeting. The proceedings opened with a pianoforte selection, " Allegro Sonata Pathetique " (Beethoven) by Mr L. W. Parsons. The Chairman in his opening address gave a humourous description of the manner in which John Barleycorn is ill-treated, and deplored the fact that so many million 'bushels of grain should be utterly wasted in the manufacture of alcoholic beverages. The Rev. S. J.IMeiHV speech was undoubtedly the chef■d'euvre of the evening. He said that although he had not taken so lively an interest in the temperance movement, he was fully conscious of the great evils ef intemperance, and the movement had hi? hearty support. The liquor traffic wns only beueficial to the brewers, publicans, doctors, and undertakers, and iterations of a spirituous nature were injurious to man's morals. The Bey. Mr Adamson also spoke. During tbe evening the following songs and recitations were given:—"Time may steal, t^| Boses,' 1 Mrs May; recitation, Master Morris; reading, Mr Harrison; !«oigV '• The Gipsy's Warning,'' Miss TJiin^n; duet, " Flowing on thou Shining Hiver," Mrs May and Miss Manton; recitation, Mr A. Fulljames. Mr L. W. Parsons ; acted as accompanist. A most enjoyable evening was brought to a close by the National Anthem.' » : t:
