RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT

THIS DAY. (Before H. Kenrick, Esq., S.M.) BBEACH OF SLAUGHTSB'HOUSE ACT. William Tetley was charged with a breach of the abore Act* but as it was the first offence, a nominal fine was inflicted. ASSAULT. , — McMahon was charged with assault* ing R. Johnson, at Hastings, on the 19th. Mr Miller, appeared for plaintiff, and Mir Brassey for defendant. AH the witnesses were ordered out of Court. Robert Johnson deposed—He resided at Hastings, and was Telegraph and Postmaster there. Recollected the 19th inst. Was in Mr Hamilton's house working, when defendant came in and said, "Well, Johnson, what about the steer." Witness told him that as he had had the chance for three months to buy it he would not now accept his otter. Defendant then used abusire language to him and tried to wrench a hammer out of bis hand. He then called Mr and Mrs Hamilton, who came into the room, and witness then went towards home.

William Hamilton, deposed—l know McMahon. When I went into the room McMahon had .the ..hammer in his hand,' but I do not know how he got it. By Mr Brassey—McMahon was the worse for liquor when he came in. Ido not. recollect the whole of the affair.

Id defence, Mr Brassey said he could not plead guilty as his client was drunk, and did not know what, he was about.

His Worship, after summing up the eridence, gave judgment for plaintiff, and fined defendant 20s and costs, £2 4s, allowing him 14 day's to find ihe money. Court then adjourned.
