On the clause 2, Mr Sutton objected to the Bill going any further, and in explanation, stated that it was a measure meant to meet the peculiar case orgmemberg of the House. The gentleman in question, an articled clerk, had come into the House, knowing the disqualification he was incurring in reference to the pro* fession for which he was studying. If the bill went far enough so as to provide for the case of other persons besides members of the House, he would be prepared to accept it, but he could not admit the right of the house to legislate for themselves. He moved that progress be reported which was negatived on the voices.
Mr McCaughan described the conduct of the opponent as blackguard conduct and cowardly. He hoped they would continue their sittings so as to defeat such unseemly conduct. Mr Hall said he was opposed to the bill, but he pointed out that the public business was being interrupted with, and he asked them to adjourn the measure. Mr Whitaker took exception to the language of the member for River ton. He explained the sudden outpouring as that of an unexperienced young mau for whom he was sorry. Mr McCaughan having left the House he would say no more.
On the suggestion of the Premier further opposition- was withdrawn, and on progress being reported the bill was reported with amendments and passed.
