CONSPIRACY AMONG THE HEAVENLY BODIES.
It is generally known that eminent astronomers have prognosticated that very preat atmospheric and magnetic disturbances will take place next year in coDsequence of tbe conjunction of four planets in perihelion. It is stated that this is the first time such a remarkable coincidence has happened within the Christian era. In the fifteenth century we believe many troubles were occasioned br the conjunction of three. But if the predictions contained in the following effusion be verified, we are in for a season of adversity compared with which pur present troubles are os nothing. ,
In a lecture delivered by Mrs Britten she said :—" The coincident perihelia of four planets is a remarkable event, and markß an astronomical era on tbe clock of our globe. : uch epochs bring new lights to the observing eves of the astronomers, who already conjecture -that our entire solar system is being drawn by some invisible and unknown force towards an undetermined point in the direction of " star twelve' of the constellation Hercules. .No part of> infinite space is unoccupied, and.no finite horizon exists amid the mighty march of creation, except man's ignorance. What logical results may now be lawfully traced from tbe simultaneous perihelia of four great pltnaU? And will such a mere drop as earth bear the crisis of united attraction from four suck mighty masses, whose influence will draw from every available source within our systrm ? The effects will develop slowly, in the regular order of sequence which marks the natural history, of tbe earth,. No sudden cataclysm will inaugurate its comparatively short duration, and many will fail to realise tbe changes it will effect until its period of maximum exertion is past. A minute eccentricity, only apparent to the exact mathematics, of astronomy, will slightly disturb the polar axis. Already we are experiencing Borne of its effects. The greatest disturbance! will occur in the air and water, or movable envelope of our planet. These will act upon all forms of animal and plant life; and the more perfectly developed, each will be best able to meet aud survive the trying changes. The fittest will survive. During these perihelia earth's climate will be especially irregular; unusual cold alternating with the unseasonable beat throughout the agitation already commenced.. Great agitation will occur among different races of men. Many forms of malarial disease will appear. Not only fever and pestjt= lence will rage in some localities, but at- v mospheric disturbances will nffect many forms of vegetable" as well as animal life. Local floods are likely to occur. The reaction of atmospheric waves and extraordinary electric tension wilt inevitably succeed such concentrated planetary attraction, and render possible development of latent spores, awaiting less .atmospheric pressure and new electrical conditions to evolve new forms of life. Crops wilt be unequal and scanty in some localities, but especially flourishing in l J other?—depending on their immediate ' surroundings. \ As, all mental- conditions 1 of. man. are intimately connected with the physical conditions of die earth Ue inhabits, social and' national dis-
putes will arise, with local famines and physical pestilence. Strife will be manifest in the warfare of contending nations. The coming changes, although not wholly gradual, will be more sudden than the apparent sunrise of a steadily advancing orb. In 1881| the star of Alpha, in tbe Dragon, passes the shaft of the Great Pyramid, where the prophecy of this perihelion was unmistakeably recorded over five thousand years ago, chiefly engraved in solid marble.—Alta sCaljfornia.
