AUCKLAND.
This day.
Duncan Livingstone, the man injured by the train at the Papakura railway station, is dead. •
"IT WAS THE CAT."
The convict Ournow, who was sentenced to 50 lashes at the Assizes, underwent 25 of them this morning. The flogging administered was very severe, and the man had to be assisted to the gaol hospital afterwards.
Mr Graves Aickin declines to stand for the City Council, though requested to do so by an influentially signed requisition. Press of business is the reason given.
Great indignation has been caused in town by the publication of a telegram stating that Mr Lusher, manager of the Auckland telegraph office, ; s to be super* seded by a man from Blenheim. The opinion prevails that it is a gross piece of departmental favoritism, and a memorial protesting against it is being signed by the leading citizens.
