Few men have left a deeper mark on their age than John Casiell. He arrived in London in 1838, with all his belongings tied up in a coloured handkerchief. At the various temperance meetings whioh he addressed, in a roagh and uncultured manner, but with an earnestness that proved his attachment to temperance views. He saw, however, that more was wanted than mere preachit g, and with a sagacity deserving recognition, he projected two strong counteractive forces to intemperancewholesome beverages and educational literature.
