WELLINGTON.

This day

His Excellency's racehorses were landed in excellent condition from the Wakatipu this morning. It is understood that notwithstanding Sir Hercules departure from the colony the horses will perform at the Canterbury meeting.

A destructive fire broke out in a house of ill-fame occupied by Maggie Baker, at 6.30 last night. Whsn the flames were first discovered they had firm hold on the building, which contained twelve rooms. A strong wind was blowing, which soon wrapped the building in flames, and the occupants had a narrow escape. The fire then spread to a four* roomed cottage, and to the workshop of Mr Fagon, adjoining Mrs Baker's, which, with a quantity of tools, was completely burnt.. Mr Webb's cottage was next to catch, and was gutted in a few minutes. A good pressure of, water was then got upon the flames, which were extinguished without further damage. The fire brigades worked well, and a detachment of seamen from H.M.B. Raleigh rendered good Bert ice in saving property. " '* ""\ ■" '■'•" '■' ■. ■•.'.■..■.,.'■ :-.: ■■->'■ • ■i»A**»«.
