THE Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. MONDAY, AUGUST 9, 1880.
We read with considerable regret the confirmation of the despatch published in our Saturday's issue to the effect that Sir Hercules Robinson will leave us immediately to assume" the Governorship of Cape Colony. His Excellency during the short period he has been amongst ns has exhibited the sterling qnalities attributed to him by the people of the other colonies it has been his lot to govern. This feeling is deepened by coincidently learning who is to be his successor—Sir Arthur Gordon, K.C.M.G., the present Governor of Fiji, and High Commissioner of Polynesia. This gentleman has gained for himself a rather unenviable notoriety from his somewhat tyrannous behaviour in administrating the affairs of his present Governorship, and to make a successful Governor of _a constitutional colony his present notions, acquired from the irresponsible change for many years of Crown dependencies, will have to undergo a very considerable change. It is even doubtful if Sir Arthur Gordon will himself be willing to assume the office of Governor of a colony with a constitution like ours, and indeed his length of service almost entitles him to retirement on a pension.
