Mining Review of the Week.

The past week has been chiefly noticed for a slackening in the tide of speculation which for some time previously had made things at the Corner brisk. JHJveryone has been down in the mouth, and much inrective is launched against '* that rotten market" by the unfortunate stock holders who bought at high figures. Although the present slate ot things is disappointing no doubt, it is what only might have been expected—shares cannot be kept up to fancy prices on mere prospects ; (he genuine class of investors must see some* thing ahead for their mouey, in the shape of gold coming out of the ground. The flatness may al«c partly be accounted for by several of tuts msw companies hardly, as yet realising the brilliant expectations formed concerning them, and the general dislike of people to pay calls. Far sooner will they pay a premium of 4s or 5s for their shares at the outset than a sixpenny call on stock that cost them next to nothing originally. The unsatisfactory stale of the affairs of the Big Pump causes a local depression in the mines dependant on that much-written about and much maligned institution, but we trust that the present agitation will be the means of discovering a practicable aud permanent solution of the difficulty, or rather mesh of difficulties which enshroud its history.

We have already (in last week's article) endeavored to show a means of placing the matter on a proper basis, and are glad to see that our opinion has been endorsed by meetings held at Auckland and the Thames by persons deeply interested. At the Auckland meeting, which was held yesterday—if we are to judge from the tone of the resolutions passed—those present were earnest in an endeavor to do something practical in the direction of purchasing the pump.
