At a meeting of the Land Board yesterday the Crown Lands Hanger reported favorably of the Katikati settlement number two, but he noticed considerable failure in grass seed. The seed referred to was chiefly brought from England by the settlers. (This reference in the Banger's report brought up the question of surface sowing. It was held that surface sowing could not be regarded as "cultivation," which implied that the ' ground must be turned over in some of the well known methods—by digging or ploughing. " < The Big Pump. „ At the adjourned meeting of the directors of the companies interested in tha working of the Big Pump, held this morning, the following resolutions were passed :— (1.) That in the opinion of this meeting, an association should be formed for the purpose of purchasing the Big Pump and continuing pumping operations. (2.) That those now present be a com* mittce to consider the question of providing funds.' (3.) That the contributing companies be requested to make good any deficiency pro rata in the expense of working' from the present time until the association is formed. (4.) That the chairmen of the various contributing companies be a committee to carry out the first proposition. C. J. Stone, Esq.,.was the convener.
