The Evening Star. PUBLISHED DAILY AT FOUR O'CLOCK P.M. Resurrexi. THURSDAY, AUGUST 5, 1880.
The oews from Afghanistan is by no means re-assuring. General Phayre with his division is on his way to reinforce General Burrows at Candahar, bat has been prevented from making much pro* gress owing to the rebellious state of the tribes. Ayoub Khan, worthy successor of Shere.Ali, has sent a large force to pre Tent supplies coming to the British troops by the Bholan Pass route. The whole campaign has been badly planned, and if further disasters eventuate the military authorities will be to blame for their want of prudence and foresight. No matter however, how culpable they may be, a thousand excuses will be open to them, and with influence to back them up they will escape the just punishment of their incomprehensible negligence.
