The Pumping Question.
A meeting of gentlemen interested id the above wai held last evening in the , Pacific Hotel, Mr R. McDonald Scott in the Chair. . '■:,-,■'-. The Chairman explained what had been done at the two, previous meetings.' Mr Brodie, the County Chairman, was present, and no doubt would state what he had done whilst in Wellington in reference to legalising . the County Council contributions towards the main*, tenance of the Pump. He was of opinion that a different mode, of administering the Pump affairs should be adopted in future. Every one of the companies benefited . should be made to contribute, and the Pump should not be worked by a private company who could -it any time tarn round and shut it up, and so injure the whole community. " " Mr Brodie said he was sorry he could not throw much light on the matter referred to by the Chairman, He had consulted a high legal authority, who expressed an opinion that the County could not legally contribute, and he had also communicated with the represents^ tives of the Thames who had promised to endeavour to have the law amended. W|After some discussion it was resolved to send the following resolution to the Premier, and the Thames members:— "That, inasmuch as the threatened stoppage of the Big Pump frpm want of funds is exercising a very detrimental ' influence on' this community, aad as the . local governing bodies have expressed a , desire to give aid towards its future , maintenance, but are not legally em* powered to do so, this meeting respect* fully requests the Government to introduce such amendments in the Counties arid' Municipal Corporations Amendment Acts $ now before the House, as will enable the local bodies to contribute."
This concluded the business.
