I The telegraph line has been cut between the Indian frontier and Cabul. London, August 2. GLADSTONE RECOVERING. The Right Hon. Mr Gladstone is pro* greasing favourably. AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS. . The cricket match, Australians v. the Gloucestershire County Team, at Clifton, was commenced- to-day. The attendance at the match was very large, and the weather was very fine throughout the day. The Australians: went in first, and were all out for 110 runs, McDonnell being caught after making 40 runs. The Home team then went in for their first innings and when stumps were drawn for the day had lost six wickets for 120 runs. GLADSTONE AND THE NATION. London, August 3. The illness of the Right Hon. Wo. Gladstone has caused grest excitement in England and abroad. He still continues, however, to improve, but it is believed he will be unable to attend the House of Commons for the remainder of the session. THE AFGHAN ENCOUNTER.LATEST PARTICULARS. Calcutta, August 3. Further details are to hand regarding the attaok made on General Burrows at Candahar by Ayoub Khan's forces. Twenty-nine officers and 400 British, and 800 friendly native troops, have been killed and wouuded in the engagement.
