As will be seen from our advertising columns, the Quarterly meeting of Licensing Commissioner! for the district of Thames and BTauraki will take place on Tuesday the 7tb September 1880.

The County Council this morning opened tenders for certain works at Paeroa, namely, the formation of a road, cutting embankment, and construction of culverts, when some very close tendering was shown. Quins and party's tender, the accepted one, was only one shilling and sixpence below the next lowest, that of Snodgrasß and party, which was £26 7s 6d, and Cummings and party's was the same amount, Mr Williams' being the highest, £36 17s. ?..-■ - : ; -

As Mr Owen will conduct the performance of Pinafore on Friday evening at the Academy the usual weekly practice of the choir of the Presbyterian Church will take place tomorrow evening instead of Friday evening.

The performance of Pinafore in aid-of the Orphanage Bridge Fund, and Ladies' Beiievolent Society will take place on Friday evening at the Academy of Music. It was at one time hrranged for to-morrow evening, but as the Fire Brigades hold their anniversary, it was thought unwise to interfere with it, and the illnoßß of one of the performers also had to* bo taken into" consideration. It ii expected a good sum will be forthcoming, as besides the excellence of the performance the deserving objects for which the entertainment is given will induce many to attend.

The annual torchlight procession and dinner of the combined Fire Brigades, which is to take place to-morrow evening, promises to be even more imposing and successful than previous ones;' The several members will parade at 6.30 o'clock at their sheds, when the procession will take place, and-at eight o'clock there will be a display of colored fire an d fireworks at the, Bank Corner. Afterwards the dinner at the Bowen will wind up the evening's relaxation. ■

Ik our article yesterday on the expenses of the; various schools at the Thames a slight error was made; the item of £727 for teachers' salaries at the Tararu school should have, been £503 18s 4d, that being the amount actually paid to the teachers engaged at that establishment during the year 1879. ,

The Secretary .stated that the future cost would be about £300 per month/After a general discussion as to the best method of continuing pumping operations and of compelling the companies interested to pay their assessments, in whioh the Chairman, Messrs C. J. Stone, C. Alexander, J. Howard, and C. McMillan took part, the meeting was adjourned till Friday afternoon, at 2 p.m. This was done in order to enable several gentlemen at the Thames to attend and make certain statements, as well as to await the action of the meeting to be held at the Thames in relation to the continuance of pumping operations.

Yestebday morning an unfortunate woribiper of Bacchus wa« fined five shillings and costs, before Judge Macdonald. His honor, after meting out the' punishment, gave the man time to find the money. This he did, but iustead of handing it otoi- to the police authorities, he reiotted to his favorite lair, the public-house, spent the money, and was again brought to the police station in a state of intoxication. Tbie morning he was fined ten shillings and costs, or in default, 48 hours' imprisonment.
