It is curious to note that no matter how serious may be the business of Hie House of or what difficulties or dangers are to be overcome, party spirit always asserts its influence brer members. Even, were r the colony on the verge of! ruin, and if the safety of
it depended on the vote of one member, he would not give it until all his better patriotic feelings bad given place to considerations of. a party character. That this is no supposition has been repeatedly demonstrated. Indeed party spirit is quits as strong here as at home, although there, when any grave situation is foreshadowed, the members of Parliament forego considerations of partyt and join in an unanimous endeavor
to .free the country of her difficulties, j It iia not however of such a vital question
that we nowspeak,, but concerns the Fatetere Block. ; In the House of Representatives on Friday night, Sir George Grey "proposed that .Messrs Brycej ■> Jones, Kenny,! Shepherd, Thompson, Wood, and himself form a committee to enquire into the transactions in regard to the Patetere block. Mr Bryce demurred to this course, and Mr Wood remarked on the mistake made by Government in treating every question as a party question. On calm consideration we have come to the co' '.elusion that this course is a most ridiculous one to pursue, inasmuch as there is at present no organised Opposition. It appears, however that as the Government have a majority they intend to use all their efforts in carrying measures in a highhanded manner. This.is all very well, but it would be far more patriotic on their part were .our representatives to appear a little less the slaves of party spirit than all appearances warrant us in believing they are.
