It appears Mr Peter Ferguson, offended at some remark in our columns in Saturday's issue, thought fit to assault a member of our staff, Mr James. Philp. Without warning this gentlemanly mine manager struck Mr Philp on the face and afterwards further molested him. If Mr Ferguson has anything to complain of in our columns the editor or publisher are the proper persons to apply to for explanations or information, but we shall not allow Mr Ferguson or such as he to assault or insult any member of our staff. As to the question whether the remark re the management of the Whau mine was called for or not is solely one of opinion, and as to our right of expressing our opinion, it will take a much * greater authority than Mr Fergusson to cause us to alter that opinion or to prote to us that we have exceeded our .duty. As the matter of the assault will probably come . before the Eesident Magistrate," we will not say further upon the subject now, but at a future time we will read Mr Ferguson such a lesson as he will not readily forget.
